OS X 10.8 MacPro1,1

Hello All,
I have decided to write this tutorial, mostly because i have seen a few Fan Boys writing that it is Hardware that is stopping Apple from supporting the new Mountain Lion 10.8. Which when i said it was apple getting people to upgrade and spend £2000 on a new pc i was immediately in a Flame War.
This is a Do-It-Yourself Tutorial, i will not post links to the full DMG as this is ILLEGAL, you will have to obtain the DVD from apple and pay for the Apple Developer Licence.

Anyway this will require you to burn the final DMG file to DVD as using the app gives you an error telling you the file has been modified and you must re-download :-(
If anyone has any solutions please let me know and i will update.
I have been at this solidly for the past 24 Hours, The problem being is that i am constantly getting the No Entry Symbol. Now i have pinned this down to the boot.efi file on the DMG.
I can get the installation to boot however the OS would not boot once the installation is finished.

I have only installed this on an MacPro1,1 however i don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t run on any of the other devices, possibly the video drivers, which can be installed later. When creating these files i have used all the strings from the Lion DVD, so anything on Lion should be supported on this!

NOTE: I think Apple has removed some drivers from this install my 7300 GT is now no longer supported. I will look into this further to see if i can bring the kexts for the older graphics from the Lion Install!

Anyway here goes!

  1. You will need to download the DMG file from https://developer.apple.com/devcenter/mac/index.action you will need to pay for a Mac Developer account which costs $99 a year.
  2. Mount the DMG that you have downloaded, inside the DMG there is a file called Install OS X Mountain Lion Preview 1.app Right click on the App and show Package Contents.
  3. You will want to go into the folder called SharedSupport and copy the file InstallESD.dmg and copy it to your Desktop.
  4. Close all the open windows, Now you will need to go into the terminal (Application/Utilities/Terminal), we are going to copy the DMG and make it writable so we can replace a file in the InstallESD.dmg image.
  5. Once in termal type “cd Desktop” then type in  ”hdiutil convert InstallESD.dmg -format UDRW -o InstallESDedited.dmg” This will create a new file on the desktop called InstallESDedited.dmg.
  6. You will now want to Double click on the newly created InstallESDedited.dmg and it will now mount an Drive called “Mac OS X Install ESD”.
  7. You are going to have to replace the System Folder in the Drive, this contains the EFI64 boot.efi and the compatible boot files. I have a EFI32 boot.efi and the compatible files from the Lion 10.7 System Folder. Here is the link to download: System.zip.
  8. Drag the System File thats on the drive into the recycle bin and unzip(if it isn’t already) the downloaded System folder and copy it onto the root of the drive.
  9. Now open up the “Packages” folder from the root. Inside this folder there will be a quite a few items in the folder, The only one we are concerned with is OSInstall.mpkg (There is also an OSInstall.pkg BE CAREFUL). We now want to drag this file into the trash folder. Download the patched versions OSInstall.mpkg & EFI32.pkg(Right Click on Link, Download Linked File As).
  10. Drag the Newly Downloaded files into the Packages Directory. The directory should now look like this:
  11. Now you want to burn the DVDusing Disk Utility (You can also restore the DMG to a USB Flash Drive, which also works), i am sure you already know how to do this but just in case, run DiskUtility (utilities/DiskUtility) on the left hand side you should see the InstallESDedited.dmg file Click on the file then Click Burn! (Remember to put a blank DVD in ;-) )
  12. Load into the Mac Pro and Enjoy, NOTE: Installation takes a lot longer than displayed, this is due to it thinking its being installed from a Faster HDD! If installed from the USB Stick then is quite a bit quicker.
Here is the Final Screenshot from my MacPro!

If you see any mistakes please leave me a comment and i will get it sorted, this includes my English!
Hope you enjoy your new MacPro Experience!

  1. Thanks, Jamie, for saving me from rushing to find a replacement for my trusty MacPro1,1, especially since I recently treated it to an 8 GB RAM boost and a second video card.

  2. Hi Jamie, will this also work with a MacBook Air 1,1? I’ve just replaced the 80GB HD with a super fast 120 GB SSD and it’s like a new machine – far too good to retire.

  3. good work!

i’m pretty confident these ‘hacks’ will remain possible in the release version. hopefully some eager people can package up the necessary support gubbins and make an installed like XPostFacto used to be for installing OSX on unsupported PPC Macs.

  4. Thank you so much for providing us this info. I have quite a few mac pros at work that won’t support 10.8 from 2006 – 2008. It is nice to know that we can potentially get all of our machines on 10.8 when the times comes.

  5. I kind of figured that someone sooner or later would come up with a solution to this. It is what I was thinking was possible too but I wasn’t sure if it would work correctly though. It does make sense though. I do hope though that the exclusion of the original MacPro is taken off the list for the final release. But, that would require a different set of programming and changing the plist statement in the install of the OS that states logic statements about what machine IDs will allow booting of the OS or install. I’m sure this same way to install could be done with those who have upgraded the processors in their first generation MacPros.

  6. Thank You Jamie, I greatly appreciate it the work you have done. I spent a lot of money on my MacPro 1,1 and still consider it a great machine, as a disabled person I can no longer afford to purchase a new machine so thank you thank you!

    Jamie S.

  7. Hi Jamie,

Thank you so much ! I thought my mac pro 1,1 was done for. Its still a very powerful machine and don’t feel like changing anytime soon.

  8. Has anyone using the netkas.org ATI 48XX drivers been brave enough to try this yet? Great Work Jamie! Really glad to see I may be able to milk another couple years of service out of my 1,1… It truly irks me that Apple claims to be ‘green’ but constantly is obsoleting perfectly good hardware in an effort to force hardware upgrades.

  9. What we really need is some genius ex-Apple engineer to write the EFI64 code firmware update for the MacPro 1,1 and 2,1 both of which are fully capable of running 64 bit. An alternative is to use the Chameleon bootloader to boot these Macs in 64 bit—it’s doable if you look around.

    • I would like to help funding someone to do this type of work. Really. If we come together to do this (and are OK to do some soldering work on our machines) I feel they could last for many more years.

  10. I am using the Chameleon method to boot the 64 bit kernel on my Mac Pro 2,1 (actually, its a former 1,1…upgraded to an 8-core 3.0). Wondering if it will still work under Mountain Lion. Will have to get my hands on the Developer Release to try.

The Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1 cannot use EFI64 as it will not fit on the 32 bit EFI chip. You need to solder a new EFI Rom on the motherboard. I don’t know of anyone who has attempted it.

  11. Jamie,

A very nice tutorial. Works very well. I have but one question. Opening System Information and clicking on the Software section I see that it reports that the 64-bit kernel is not loaded. Is this merely a fault or does your fix actually install the 32-bit kernel?

    • He’s loading the 32 bit kernel. The 32 bit kernel may not be in the final version.

The only way to boot the 64 bit kernel is using Chameleon, which uses BIOS, like a PC instead of EFI.

  13. Hi, and many thanks for this very helpful tutorial!
Hope I can be excused for slightly deviating from the subject, but I can’t resist using the occasion of talking to some other MacPro 1,1 users about an issue that has been bothering me for years: mine runs rather hot, with temperatures on the memory banks and the North Bridge in the 70s (centigrade) when observed with the free temperature monitor ( http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html )
Could anyone confirm whether that is normal for this machine, or am I the only unlucky one? I have been leaving the side of the case open and pointing a small fan at the memory banks. (The original case is not a great design in this respect, because they sit in the warm exhaust stream coming from the processors … ) Many thanks!

  14. Hey guys,

I am finding that many version of Mountain Lion have been so called “Fixed” and there is no access to the SharedSupport Folder, so I am stuck at this point.

    • Sorry, You will have to look elsewhere for a Torrent of this file. I will NOT post or allow sharing of illegal links on my site.
      Jamie

      • Okay, do you know how i use the terminal. When i writh something that in the instructon than it says that it can’t find the file. So what can i do or what i have to do?

  15. I used to be recommended this web site by my cousin. I am now not positive whether this post is written through him as nobody else recognize such distinct approximately my problem. You are amazing! Thank you!

  16. Well, I gave it a shot. Installed Mountain Lion using this method. Runs fine on my Mac Pro 2,1 (formerly a 1,1) using the 32 bit kernel. Attempted to boot the 64 bit kernel using Chameleon (this works beautifully in Lion using the method described on the Netkas forum). Unfortunately, I get stuck in an endless loop…after Chameleon does its thing, I get the grey Apple logo screen for a moment, then…boom…the system reboots itself…this happens over and over.

Back running Lion and the 64 bit kernel via Chameleon.

Not sure whats going on. Probably a Chameleon issue, but perhaps not.

Graphics card is an ATI 4870 Mac edition. May try again tomorrow with an Nvidia GeForce 470 (PC version…no EFI…which works great with the Chameleon boot on Lion).

  17. This is a perfect tutorial !!!
I installed ML using this method on an external FW disk attached to my Mac Pro 2,1 (ex 1,1) and runs like a charm with the 32 bit kernel …..
I thought this was an hack for running on unsupported machines, so attaching the same FW disk to a brand new MBPro I expected to have a lot of problems booting from it a “supported” machine. Not at all !!! ML boots perfectly AND with 64 bit kernel: isn’t it “magic” ??? We can use this modified installer for all machines? Which are the drawbacks?
    Thanks

  18. SUCCESS FOLKS!!

Now running 10.8 Mountain Lion with the 64 bit kernel on my Mac Pro 2,1 (upgraded 1,1) using Chameleon.

Had to try several builds of Chameleon before it would boot. The only one that worked with Mountain Lion and my Mac Pro 2,1 was r1820. More recent builds (r1830, r1839) resulted in a reboot loop.

Full graphics acceleration with Nvidia GTX 470 (PC card).

    Now on to more testing!

    • It’s not clear to me if I really need to apply this hack (that actually patches the boot efi) in order to go 64 bit through Chameleon (that AFAIK bypasses the boot efi) …..

      • It was easier to get it running with the 32 bit kernel first using Jamies patch, as I did not know if I could get the 64 bit kernel running with any available version of Chameleon.

Really, if you intend to run the 64 bit kernel with Chameleon, you don’t need the 32 bit kernel at all. I have not yet come up with a workflow for that, though. You can’t boot off the Mountain Lion install disk, as it won’t have The Chameleon boot loader on it. Right now it would be easier to install it on a bare drive using an EFI64 Mac, then moving it to your Old Mac Pro. Will have to study how Hackintosh owners pull this off without EFI.

        • One more thing…. I strongly believe the 32 bit kernel will be removed on subsequent releases of Mountain Lion…so Jamie’s mod will not work if this happens. If the 64 bit kernel has no use on supported machines, Apple will probably remove it. Mountain Lion will be App Store download only. Keeping the file size down will be important. Also..this preview of Mountain Lion is pretty bare bones. Only really a tease of some new apps tacked onto Lion. Hardly anything new so far. I think the next preview will be more of an indicator of the release version.

  19. thanks a ton for putting this all together. i just bought a used macpro1,1 and nearly flipped out when i read it would run mountain lion. whew, crisis averted.

  20. You understand therefore significantly relating to this topic, made me individually consider it from a lot of varied angles. Its like men and women aren’t fascinated unless it is something to accomplish with Woman gaga! Your personal stuffs nice. At all times handle it up!

  21. I have sufficient skills to follow explicit directions but not enough to understand Apple’s issues with my MacPro1,1. Why are they putting the early Mac Pros out of the running for 10.8?

    • Apple uses EFI to boot their computers, unlike PC’s, which use BIOS.
In 2006-7, Apple used an EFI ROM that could only handle 32bit code in their computers. From 2008 and beyond, they began using an EFI ROM that could handle 64 bit code.

They could continue to write 32bit EFI and Kexts for the remaining machines that can’t run 64 bit firmware, but they would rather that you replace your 5-6 year old computer.

I’m going to wait another year or two, as my 6 year old computer can still run circles around many of the supported machines (an 8 x 3.0 GHZ Mac Pro with 32 GB of RAM is not obsolete!)…and I’ve found a way to do it without their stinking 64 bit EFI.

    • Thanks, John, for your scholarly explanation.

We all have our fingers crossed the folks like Jamie and you can find a way around whatever Apple does in the forthcoming 10.8 releases.

  22. Hi!

I’m actually running the base model of the system described in this tutorial! A Mac Pro with two 2.66 dual core processors but my really question is are there are performance lags or is the machine perfectly capable of running the OS except the EFI won’t let it boot??

    Thanks!

  23. Has anyone be able to use Jamie method with 10.812A154q ? I have not been able to get the “InstallESDedited.dmg” to check and restore,

  24. I have been running the 64 bit kernel on my Mac Pro 2,1 (upgraded 1,1 actually) using Chameleon for months. There is no performance hit at all. The first generation Mac Pro is a dual Xeon machine and is fully capable of 64 bit operation (it runs Windows and Linux in 64 bit without hacks). It’s only the EFI that makes it problematic for Mac OSX.

  25. Now that you’ve installed preview #1, how difficult is it to move onto #2?

What I’m asking is what happens with automatic system updates after 10.8 has been installed this way?

  26. Unfortunately for me although I got the install started, after the first reboot it simply shuts down within 30 sec. Going to try booting off the Lion DVD I made for emergencies such as this. I have the ATI 5770 graphics upgrade for my 1,1

    • Oh yeah I was using the 3rd preview. From reading othe comments I wonder if there is no longer a 32 bit kernel?

  27. U downloaded the Developer Preview 3, it seems not to work,

I did the tutorial, and he boots up in the recovery disc of Lion, where i can reinstall Lion.

Am I doing something wrong here?

  28. Is this tip working with the last Mountain Lion release ? The previous message says there was a problem with preview 2 and Mac Pro 1,1 which is the one I have.

    Thank you

  29. It only works with DP 1. But the effort of making ML run on top of a 32-bit EFI is useless due to the nature of it. You won’t be able to upgrade the system neither use the advance security features such as FileVault since it will check for the integrity of the boot sequence. Shame on you, Apple. I have a MacPro1,1 (flashed to 2,1) with 32GB RAM, Dual Quad-core, 16TB HD, ATI HD 5870, and won’t be able to upgrade to ML. No problem, Windows 8, the machine is yours.

  30. This topic has been idle for several months. Now that Mountain Lion is imminent, what’s the likelihood Jamie’s tutorial will work with the released version?

  31. i followed all your steps on the GM release of ML and its stopping at “The additional components needed to install OS X can’t be found” any idea’s ??? i double checked all the steps and i followed your directions exactly. im doing this on a Mac Pro 1.1

  32. Anyone tried this on a Macbook Pro 2,2? it was the first 64bit model with Core 2 Duo. Great machine and seems a shame not to run Mountain Lion on it. it has Ati Radeon X1600 graphics.

  33. Has anyone gotten the GM running on the MacPro1,1 or MacPro2,1? I have a 5750 video card, so I don’t think the video drivers will be an issue.

  34. Is there a way to get this to work with the Golden Master release? That DMG doesn’t appear to contain all the necessary files listed in Jamie’s instructions.

  35. Forgive me for this naive question, but is there a way to “fool” the system into thinking it is a 64 bit machine?

** i.e. digging deep into the EFI, and tweaking it so that it will display 64bit extension YES in the system profiler…

  38. I get the error the addition components needed to install OSX can’t be found
I am using the GM version . does anyone have the solution for this ..

  39. Doesn’t work on MacBook Air 1,1 (1st gen).
    Receives message:
“The additional components needed to install OS X can’t be found.”

    any advice?

  40. For those who have error “The additional components needed to install OS X can’t be found.” copy SIURessource.pkg from developer preview 4 to GM image.

  41. This site http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=280467 discusses the SIUResources.pkg from developer preview 4 and posts a link to the file. I downloaded it and copied the file to the Packages folder (shown in the image in step 6 that Jamie posted). This gets the install past the error message “The additional components needed to install OS X can’t be found.” However, once the system sets up the install and reboots, the OS will not boot. (circle with a line thru it). That’s as far as I got. Jamie – have you tried your procedure yet with the production release of 10.8? Thanks for the blog and help. Looking forward to getting a MacPro 1,1 running Mountain Lion!

    • I have a similar issue. When it reboots, it opens up a dialog for me to reinstall Lion, restore from a backup, or just restart. There is no option for installing Mountain Lion. I’m using a USB, having followed all the directions above. Any help would be appreciated!

  42. I have the DMG for the app Store, i’m starting from step 7. Do I need to boot from a DVD? because i tried to install from the desktop and it launches… only problem is I get a message saying “to download and restore os x, your computer’s eligibility will be verified with apple…” I hit continue and it says “Could not find installation information for this machine”

  44. Followed the instructions, not sure what may have gone wrong. Or if it has to do with the GM OS X 10.8 differing from the file originally modified.

All the changes went well. Trying to burn to DVD it says there not enough room on the DVD. So, I tried installing directly from the installer. It goes ok until the screen passed agreeing to the terms, and the installer says some components missing. Should I start over or ???

Don’t want to mess up my MacPro 1,1 if this is a potential hazard. If I’ve done something wrong in the mods, I’ll be more than glad to go back through the instructions (very good by the way).

  46. Well…. I started from scratch with the modifying of the InstallESD. This time I was able to burn the DVD (don’t know what the difference was). Will wait and see, then try and install. BTW – to be safe a Time Machine BU is going on right now. :)

    Tom

  47. I too got this far. Super excited about getting almost there. But on the reboot I get reinstall Lion, backup or restart. A restart gets me back to my Lion desktop, so I’m glad a Time Machine restore won’t be necessary. But I feel I’m real close. I should add that I’m trying this on my MacBook 13 inch mid 2007 black…which is either brave or dumb or both. Thanks…any tips from here will be greatly appreciated.

  48. Hello, Is it possible to install Moutain Lion on my Macbook 13″ beginning of 2008? Because it is not supported by moutain Lion. Thanks in advance for your help.

  49. hey guys,
thanks for the awesome tutorial thus far jamie. i too am getting stuck on the prohibitory sign after patching the installer package with the SIUResources file. I’m on a MacPro 1.1, and made my InstallESD from a package downloaded from the Mac App store on a compatible machine. I’m installing onto a test hd, so no damage to my main HD. Anxious to hear if anyone has any success with this! I’d love to avoid going the Chameleon route.

    thanks,
    bg

  50. Tried this on Mac 1,1 with Released Mountain Lion Version (not Beta). No Problems at creating the DVD. But at installation, the installation stop direct and Boot the System. Tried to install from InstallESDedited.dmg – getting error “Setup didn’t found a component” (translated from German) and then Setup stops.

Have anyone Installed with this instruction the released Mountain Lion Version successful on Mac Pro 1,1?

    Thanks :) .

  51. Tried the directions on the release version of Mountain Lion. Everything was going well until I got to the stage where it said to select a drive to install ML on. Chose the drive, and got a message saying essential components were missing. Could not continue. Any suggestions? Same setup as you.
    Lion (10.7)
    Processor: 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    512 MB Video Card (ATI)
    24 MB RAM
    Model Identifier MacPro1,1

  52. Hello,

Tried also on MacPro 1.1 to install the official release, unfortunately at one point the installation is trying to download specific components from Internet, but not compatible with our machine…. The installation then abort ….

    Any Workaround available ?
    Thanks

  53. I wish this would have worked with the Official Release of Mountain Lion. The other method just doesn’t seem right. If I wanted to do those steps I would make a Hackintosh.

  54. I tried your method with retail 10.8, however copying SIUResources.pkg to the Packages folder, as well as using OSInstall.mpkg from http://www.jabbawok.net/?p=47

In the end, the DMG is too large to burn to a DVD, and when trying to boot from an 8GB thumb drive, or from the installer itself, I get the “no access” symbol at startup.

Jamie, have you been looking at a way to get this working with retail copy of 10.8?

    • Interesting development. I tried again with the USB drive, and again got the “no access” symbol at startup. The, when I thought my Mac would just choose my default disk, I got to an “installing” screen!

      http://i.imgur.com/KMrZV.jpg

However, I never got past it. Progress?

      P.S.
Your captcha code thing is kind of busted…

      • I got just as far as you Jonny. I didn’t let it stay on the screen too long though. How long did you let it sit there? I was thinking about trying it again and letting it sit for a few hours. My reasoning is maybe it is installing, just not showing the actual progress on that screen.

  55. i get to the point of installation made, but at boot, I have the choice to re-install Lion, restore from Time Machine or whatever other option I don’t want to use …

    help!

  56. Can anyone confirm they have done this on a Macpro1,1 with the Radeon X1900 card? Neither video cards (GEForce 7300GT and Radeon X1900) are supposed to have 64-bit drivers but Jamie managed to get it installed so…

  57. My MacPro 1,1 has an ATI Radeon HD 4870 (Apple version) video card. Does anyone know if this card is supported by OS X Mountain Lion?

      • I have discovered a couple of examples of successful OS X Mountain Lion installs on a later Mac Pro using a 4870 graphics card. This maybe important since part of the compatibility issue besides the EFI is the graphics card that ships with the Mac Pro 1,1.

        For example from http://roaringapps.com/apple-device:54

  58. Hi Jamie – I am interested in using your method to upgrade my 1,1 / 5770 HD system to run Mountain Lion and subsequently install OS X Server to then use my machine for website hosting. Have you learned anything regarding differences between the developers version and final version of Mountain Lion that might dissuade me from doing this? Thanks, Tony

followed a different tutorial, and was able to install it onto a test drive. his guide shows sound driver fixes at the end of the installation, which i didnt need. i’m gonna see what kind of updates are available and run them, though i’m still not confident enough to upgrade my existing 10.7 work system.

    enjoy!

    • Ben,

I have Mac Pro 1,1 and was debating using that walkthrough. I have GT7300, and don’t mind upgrading card to ATI if I knew Mtn Lion would run nicely.

I have it in Fusion 4, and Launchpad is bad, iMessage won’t work. If you experience same thing on true install I will pass on attempting.

Have 5GB RAM, but saw some people having kernel panics w/ more than 4GB on another method, which looked “easier” to get up and running.

  60. Hi Jamie,
Thx for the tutorial. I can mount the modified image and i can start the installation but when the mac reboot i get a crossed circle. Do you have any tips for me? My System is an Mac Pro 1.1 with 10.6 and a flashed 5770. Thx

  61. PLEASE HELP !!!!

    Okay here’s my setup:
    MacPro 1,1 Quad 2.66
    6GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB graphics
4 HD’s as 1 TB Stripped RAID Insternal
1 Raptor HD with 2 Partitions. Boot=1Gb Installer=70GB MBR as osx extended hfs+

I have done all the steps from 1-10 but i still cannot get Chameleon 2.1 to boot into the 70GB Installer partition where i cloned the ML Installer.
On the boot loader i select HD 0,2 Installer drive and i see it flash an error msg saying Mach-O Bad Magic Number!!??!!??
I double checked my org.chameleon.Boot.plist and see that it says hd(0,2) so i don’t know where to start figuring out this one.
    Any help from anybody!?!
Plz e-mail me also at vazdef at hotmail
    Thanks!

  62. Nothing fucking works with final stop asking jeeshh.
And if you have older video cards wont even bother.
And Jamie doesn’t fucking answer anyone in the last 2000 threads asking him to so why keep asking the doosh bag.

  63. Hi guys, I was shocked when I discovered both my Macs will be out of bussiness pretty soon. I have just made some fixes to my good old iMac early 2006. I bought a Core Duo Processor (Intel T7600 2,33 Ghz), opened the computer, peeled all the plastics and replace the CPU, but when I tried to install Lion, I found out it wasn’t possible, perphaps due to the iMac’s EFI32 (I’m guessing). Why I couldn’t install Lion, I really don’t know. I thought you just have to have a core 2 duo processor.

I also have a 2008 Macbook Pro with Lion, but it won’t accept Mountain Lion.

My question is: given that I’m stuck with Snow Leopard on my iMac, do you think I could do the same trick to a 10.7 developer version? And that way, install 10.7 Lion and maybe mountain lion… Thank you!

  64. duuuuudeeee really? After i made a big fucking comment to help these fucking people i get You have mistyped the captcha : to prove that your are not a spam machine, please retry!

  65. This tutorial no longer works for the final version, apple did something and it stopped working, i followed this tutorial a month ago and it worked, now it’s not working anymore. And yes i modified the Distribution file to match the new version and the .plist files from system folder, it’s simply not working, i think it’s a drivers problem or something like that… i will try now to download and try to see if the golden master works…

  66. When you have installed the golden Master 10.8 on a Mac Pro 1.1, can you upgrade to 10.8.1 or 10.8.2 ? i wait for answer before installing new system

  67. Great Guide! May I know what video card do you use on the Mac Pro 1,1 setup? I have Quadro FX 4500 on my Mac Pro 1,1, do you think that’s compatible for the ML build?

  68. Hi Jamie, i am still on Snow Leopard on my “Home” Macpro 1,1.
I managed a few months ago to get my Macpro 1,1 at work, to run on Lion 10.7 64bit.

Didn`t you have a blog for that too? From Snow Leopard to Lion Os X 10.7 in 64 bit on a Macpro 1,1?
I cannot find the instructions on the net any more.

And In order to go to Mountain Lion i first have to install Lion right?

    Thanks, Marc

  69. I installed Mountain Lion on and external SSD that was connected to my MacBook Pro. Got all my programs installed also. Then put it into my MacPro 1,1 and no go. I’ll upgrade to the newer 5770 Graphics card if I can get my install to work. Can I change anything on my install or should I put in the Chameleon21_r1921 for it to work?

  70. Howdy all, I just wanted to share my success in installing the developers preview 1 on a 2006 1,1 Mac Pro. I had upgraded my Mac Pro to a 3.0 quad core set up, from the origingal 2.66 dual core set. I also upgraded my graphics card from a 1900xt to a ATI 5770 oem. I ended up downloading the DP 1 from a torrent site and then used the system.zip, osinstall.mpkg, and efi32.pkg from this site. I ended up using a program called lion diskmaker to automatically put the files on a USB drive. I rebooted and was able to install 10.8 with no issues. later on I tried to install DP4 but was unsuccessful, I always got the circle with a line through it error. I was wondering if anyone on here had any luck with upgrading to a higher Developers Preview? If so, how did you do it? Thanks and good luck!

  71. This is a funny farm-territory. More than a year ago I duplicated in numerous times the Holy Grail procedures without any success. I kindly asked the the guru about the failure, but never received an answer. Later I saw other people duped and I openly posted my opinion about this false procedure. Now, when after 8 months I am looking back to the page, I see more people having issues, and not even getting answer from the guru. It is only salt into the wound, that my earlier posting is simply being erased. Hey dude , would it be much better and honest if you would tell the readers, that the whole thing was a hoax?
